Acetabular Labrum - Labral Tear
Acetabular Labrum - Labral Tear
The acetabular labrum is a cartilaginous structure surrounding the edge of the acetabulum. It plays a crucial role in stabilizing the hip joint and is essential for hip biomechanics.
Unfortunately, the labrum is susceptible to injuries, particularly in athletes, and can tear. A labral tear can cause acute or chronic hip pain and contribute to micro-instability and abnormal joint function.
Labral tears can cause pain in the groin area, a sensation of hip "locking," burning pain, etc. Pain may worsen with walking, running, stair climbing, rotational movements, or prolonged sitting with the hip flexed at 90 degrees.
Hip arthroscopy allows for easy labral repair using specialized sutures that anchor into the acetabular bone and pass through the labrum to stabilize it. Labral repair is a globally accepted treatment with excellent outcomes in managing chronic hip pain.
