Iliotibial Band Lenghtening

Iliotibial band syndrome is a painful condition characterized by lateral hip pain, particularly in athletes and predominantly in women. It is usually treated conservatively; however, in some cases, symptoms persist and are particularly severe and persistent.

In such cases, we proceed with surgical lengthening of the iliotibial band. Traditionally, this procedure required a large surgical incision and significant tissue dissection. However, in recent years, it can be performed arthroscopically through two small incisions. These provide access to the iliotibial band at the hip surface, where precise cuts are made to achieve lengthening. This lengthening relieves tension in the band, leading to symptom relief, and has shown great success in this group of patients.
