Microfracture Technique for Acetabular Cartilage Damage
Microfracture Technique for Acetabular Cartilage Damage
Chondral Lesions
Unfortunately, in many cases, femoroacetabular impingement or acetabular labral tears have caused damage to the articular cartilage of the acetabulum. This means that the protective layer of the original cartilage has suffered significant damage or may be entirely absent. In such cases, we use the microfracture technique, which involves stimulating the subchondral bone with specialized instruments to encourage the release of biological factors that activate the formation of new articular cartilage. However, this new cartilage is not hyaline but fibrocartilage, which is of lower quality. Nevertheless, it is capable of filling the defect in the damaged cartilage and improving the joint's functionality.
